Hector Ortiz died on Wednesday after a long fight with cancer. He had been a manager and coach for the Texas Rangers for 18 years. He was 54 years old. The Rangers said Ortiz died at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, which is close to the team’s area for spring training in Surprise.

For the past three years, Ortiz has been a coach on the minor league player development team. Before that, he worked as a manager under two different names, Jeff Banister and Chris Woodward, in the big leagues.
He was the first base coach for four years, the bench coach for one, and the catching supervisor for one. He was also a manager and coach in the Rangers’ lower leagues and a boss in the Puerto Rican Winter League for a number of years.
From 1988 to 2005, the former catcher played 18 professional seasons. He played in 93 big league games with the Royals and seven with the Kansas City Royals. The Los Angeles Dodgers picked up Ortiz in the 1988 draft.
Because Ortiz had cancer for three years, Rangers coach Bobby Wilson made a blue jacket with “Hector Strong” and a catcher’s mask that looked like it came from Texas. The money from the sales has helped families who are dealing with cancer.
